In 2017, South Indian films witnessed a promising trend in the overseas market with the euphoria surrounding these films getting fuelled by the dream run of Baahubali 2: The Conclusion in markets like US/Canada, United Kingdom, Gulf, Australia and China.
SS Rajamouli’s Baahubali 2 starring Young Rebel Star Prabhas, Rana Daggubati, Tamannah Bhatia, Anushka Shetty and Ramya Krishna became a worldwide blockbuster upon its release. The film has grossed over Rs 1,658 Cr worldwide, standing next only to Bollywood star Aamir Khan’s Dangal, which had grossed more than Rs 2,200 Cr.
At overseas box office, Baahubali 2 just occupied the 3rd position. Baahubali 2:The Conclusion earned $625K gross in Japan. The historic and war drama recently completed its theatrical run in Russia with $93K gross, taking its latest overseas cumulative gross to $48 million (Rs 309 Cr). With this, Baahubali 2 has dethroned Aamir Khan’s PK ($47.2 Million) to stand third in the list of all-time highest grossing Indian movies in the overseas market.
Baahubali is about the battle for the ownership of an ancient kingdom between two brothers. The story is woven together in two parts with dance, music, emotion and drama.
Aamir Khan’s Dangal ($228 Million) and Secret Superstar ($103 Million) are the Top 2 overseas grossers from India. Baahubali 2 and PK are at No.3 and No.4 respectively.
