Mahanati/Nadigaiyar Thilagam, the biopic of legendary actress Savitri, has been widely appreciated by both audiences and critics alike. To see Gemini Ganesan’s seven daughters together is a rare sight. In December 2004, when Gemini Ganesan was very ill, his daughters down to Chennai and nurse their father. They again met in February 2005 at Chennai Apollo Hospital. Rekha was to inaugurate the Apollo Wellness Clinic, and all the sisters except Rekha’s own sister, Radha, made it a point to attend the function.
The eldest among the six sisters is Dr Revathi Swaminathan, MD is a radiation oncology specialist in Peoria, IL and has been practicing for 50 years, Dr Kamala Selvaraj, Gemini Ganesan’s second daughter, runs the G G Hospital in Chennai. Narayani Ganesan is a journalist. The youngest is Dr Jaya Shreedhar, a health advisor with Inter News Network.
Bollywood actress Rekha and Radha are Gemini Ganesan’s daughters from actress Pushpavalli, and Vijaya Chamundeswari, daughter of actress Savitri, is a fitness expert who is working at the G G Hospital.
Recently during the media interaction, Dr Kamala Selvaraj ( daughter of Gemini Ganesan and Alamelu), fired on Mahanati makers, she isn’t so pleased about how her father was portrayed in the film. Kamala Selvaraj said, “I know Mahanati film makers were in touch with Vijaya Chamundeswari (Savitri’s daughter), I warned Vijaya Chamundeswari about this. I told her to be careful of any consequential damage.”Kamala Selvaraj further said, “My father Gemini Ganesan didn’t influence Savitri to become an alcoholic.”
Gemini Ganesan was candid about his relationships with co-stars Pushpavalli and Savitri and never denied their presence in his life. While Gemini Ganesan married TR Alamelu and then Savitri, he was never married to Pushpavalli. Alamelu was deeply hurt by Gemini Ganesan other marriages. Gemini Ganesan’s children from his various relationships bonded well, and claim the credit goes to the mothers who never allowed any acrimony to build up in their hearts.
Pushpavalli was not the wife of Gemini Ganesan. In 1954,when Rekha was born, the rumor was rife that Rekha was the Gemini Ganesan’s illegitimate child. According to few, Gemini Ganesan had secretly married Pushpavalli. Rekha also did not attend the funeral of Gemini Ganesan because she was busy in the shoot for a film in Kulu Manali in Himachal Pradesh.
Rekha is said to be very interested to watch Mahanati. The sources say that Rekha’s sister Radha said to have informed the makers of Mahanati that Rekha is willing to watch Mahanati.
