On 16th December 2012, a 23 years old paramedical student was brutally gang-raped on a moving bus in Delhi, an incident that forced India to confront the horrors of gender-based sexual violence prevalent in the country. And now, almost six years and countless vigils later, the blood-curdling gang-rapes in Kathua and Unnao have shaken India once again.
In early January, Asifa Bano, an 8-year-old girl in a purple dress, was grazing her horses in a meadow in Kashmir when a man beckoned her into the forest. She followed. According to the police report, he grabbed her by the neck and forced her to take sleeping pills. With the help of a friend, he dragged her to a nearby temple and locked her inside. For the next three days, the two men and at least one other raped her, again and again. Later, Asifa Bano’s crumpled body was found in the forest of Jammu’s Kathua, in the same purple dress.
The rape and murder case of Asifa have left people divided not just in the region but also in India itself. Celebrities too have voiced their solidarity with Kashmiris condemning the brutal torture the little girl had to go through before she was mercilessly killed.
According to the latest update, BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar, who is the main accused in the rape of a 17-year-old girl in Uttar Pradesh’s Unnao, has been sent to seven-day CBI custody.
The victim has alleged that she was raped by the MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar at his residence on 4th June 2017, where she had gone with a relative seeking a job.
Many Tollywood, Kollywood and Bollywood celebs took Twitter to seek justice and express their anger. While celebs like Kamal Haasan, Akshay Kumar and Farhan Akhtar expressed their shock through tweets, many celebs like Sonam Kapoor, Radhika Apte, Swara Bhasker, Neha Dhupia, Kareena Kapoor Khan, posted their pictures holding placards with these words on them, “I am Hindustan. I am Ashamed. #Justiceforourchild 8-year-old gang-raped. Murdered. In ‘Devi’- sthaan Temple. #Kathua
Actor turned politician Kamal Haasan, Varalaxmi Sarath Kumar, Samanaha Akkineni, Trisha Krishna are also demanding justice for the Kathua victim.
On the otherside Prime Minister Narendra Modi finally broke his silence on the Kathua and Unnao rape cases and promised justice to ‘India’s daughters’. Modi said, “ This is Shameful. It’s an insult to freedom fighters who gave their lives for the independence of this country. We are all ashamed as a society, as a country.”
