Editor Review

Mani Ratnam’s romantic entertainer Tamil movie ‘Kaatru Veliyidai’ in Telugu as ‘Cheliyaa’ starring Karthi and Aditi Rao Hydari, revolves around the story of a military pilot, has hit the theaters today on 7th April.  Popular producer and distributor Dil Raju is presenting the Telugu version under Sri Venkateswara Creations banner. Let’s see the story line.

Story: Varan is a military pilot, who is held a prisoner of war.   Being in prison, he recalls his romance with a local doctor Leela (Aditi Rao Hydari).   He meets Leeela in a hospital as he met  with an accident during a trip with another girl  on hills. They meet again and again and love blossoms between them. Varun takes Leela to his home in New Delhi to attend his brother’s wedding and she comes to know the past of Varun.  Varun’s commitments push Leela away from the relationship.  What happens during Varun’s brother wedding? How will Varun free himself from Pakastani Jail? How will he win his love again? To get these answers, one should watch the movie on silver screen.

Plus Points:

  • Karthi’s performance
  • Cinematography by  Ravi Varman
  • BGM by AR Rahman

Minus Points:

  • Dragged story
  • Predictable plot
  • Uninteresting narration

Performance: Karthi as Varun delivers his superb performance. He is good as lover boy as well as a fighter pilot who works for motherland. He pulls off the role with ease and his performance at the climax deserves applause.  He suites the role well though he looks odd without mustaches. Aditi Rao Hydari is good in expression. Her emotional performance wins the heart of movie lovers. She maintains balance in both glamour as well as in acting.  She does justice to her role as a doctor and her chemistry with Karthi is highlighted. KPAC Lalitha, RJ Balaji, Shraddha Srinath, Rukmini Vijayakumar and others performed accordingly.

Technical:   Kargil war and jail break are used as a backdrop. Mani Ratnam is at his best in technical departments.  Cheliyaa has rich production values. AR Rahman's songs and background score, Ravi Varman's cinematography, stunts, VFX works and selection of exotic and  scenic locations are the major attraction on the technical fronts. The dialogues are simple.  The costume designer has done superb job. Karthi looks handsome in army attire. Editing by Sreekar Prasad is smooth. Production design by Sharmista Roy is of top-notch quality. The narration is slow that tests the patience of the audiences. Screenplay is not well written.

Analysis: Cheliyaa is just an average movie, based on love and war. Background music and Cinematography are the major assets. First half of the movie is good but the second half is very slow. The movie lovers who expect sweet romance between lead pair, might get disappointed.  Cheliyaa is best for them who want to watch glorious visuals.
