Babita Phogat, the wrestler turned politician, married wrestler Vivek Suhag in Haryana on Monday. On the occasion of the wedding, Babita Phogat’s sister Ritu took to Twitter to congratulate her sister. The 30-year-old Babita Phogat looked lovely in a bridal red lehenga and the groom wore a cream and golden outfit. Babita Phogat’s red lehenga is similar to the Sabyasachi creation that our Desi girl and actress Priyanka Chopra wore for her wedding last year. Apart from such an auspicious occasion, what came as a more delight that there was no dowry, but the highlight was that the bride and groom took eight ‘pheras’. The wrestler Babita Phogat took an extra phera apart from the usual seven wedding pheras around the holy fire. It is being said that the extra phera was for a pledge to save, teach and let the girl child play.
Geeta Phogat and Babita Phogat are well known for their wrestling skills across the country. Although they were quite popular amongst the people as wrestlers, both Geeta Pongat and Babita Pongat became a household name post the mega success of Aamir Khan starrer Dangal, which was inspired by their life struggle. The sport based drama Dangal showcased their struggles to break into wrestling, a male-dominated sport in their home state, Haryana.
It is known the news that Babita Phogat, had tried her hand at politics earlier this year when she contested from Dadri constituency in Haryana assembly elections. She lost to independent candidate Sombir Sangwan in the elections. She had received 24,786 votes. Along with her, wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt too lost out in the elections.
Babita Pongat whose father Mahavir Singh Phogat is also a member of the BJP (Bharatiya Janatha Party), was defeated by Independent candidate Somvir Sangwan in Dadri in the Charkhi Dadri assembly segment by a margin of 14272 votes.
