The court in New York sentenced the former Hollywood figurehead, Harvey Weinstein, 23 years in prison after he was found guilty of s*xual assault and rape in a landmark trial. The 67-year-old Harvey Weinstein found guilty in a trial in New York last month, a dramatic fall from grace for one of Hollywood’s most powerful figures. Harvey Weinstein appeared in court on Wednesday in a wheelchair. His lawyers had appealed for leniency and said even the minimum sentence of five years could be a life sentence.
Harvey Weinstein wore a blank face as he was taken out of the courtroom.
Harvey Weinstein was handed the custodial sentence on 11th March. He was found guilty of raping a woman, also forcing oral s*x on a production assistant Miriam Haley in 2006. He was imposed 20 years for a first-degree criminal s*x act for forcing oral sex on Haley and three years for the third-degree rape of an aspiring actress Jessica Mann in 2013.
New York jurors acquitted Weinstein of the most serious charges, of predatory s*xual assault, which could have seen him given an even longer jail term.
Harvey Weinstein also faced felony charges of forcible rape, forcible oral copulation, s*xual penetration by use of force and s*xual battery by restraint in Los Angeles.
