If Rahul Gandhi hadn’t done that then, wouldn’t he have been disqualified now?

Now there is another discussion about an incident that happened in 2013 when the former president of Congress and MP Rahul Gandhi was disqualified in Parliament. Opinions are being expressed that Rahul Gandhi would not have been disqualified now if he had not done so then. Now it is being spread on social media that Rahul had confirmed his disqualification ten years ago. What has just happened. Now the disqualification is linked to the incident that happened ten years ago.

In April 2013, the Supreme Court issued a sensational verdict. According to the Representation of the People Act,  If the MPs and MLAs are sentenced to imprisonment for two years in any case, then the said representative will be disqualified. The moment the court pronounces the verdict, the public representative becomes ineligible for his office. The public representative has the option to appeal the verdict.

However, Supreme Court held that this did not protect against disqualification. After 5 months of this verdict, Congress government tried to change this provision in the Representation of the People Act. An ordinance was prepared for this and introduced in the Parliament.

MP Rahul Gandhi strongly opposed this ordinance introduced by the Congress government. He said that it was his personal opinion that the ordinance was inappropriate. He alleged that this is a political decision and every party does the same. However, Rahul commented that it is time to put a full stop to this nonsense. A comment was made in Parliament that this ordinance should be torn up and thrown away.

Congress leaders say that if Rahul Gandhi had not opposed the ordinance then it would not have become a law. If that had happened, the issue of Rahul Gandhi’ disqualification would not have come up for discussion, political observers said. It is said that in 2013, Rahul Gandhi had prepared the ground for his disqualification.
