A rescue operation is underway after a chunk of the Nanda Devi glacier on Sunday broke off at Joshimath in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district, trapping several people who were working at the power plant which was swept away as the waters rushed down the mountain sides in a raging torrent.
According to the latest report, 40-50 people may have swept away in the gushing waters after the glacial burst. Over 170 laborers, 22 employed at Rishiganga, and 148 employed at the NTPC plant are missing. IG NDRF Amrendra Kumar said that Sunday’s flooding triggered by the glacial burst is not as big as the 2013 Kedarnath calamity. Responding to the unexpected tragedy, Telugu superstar Mahesh Babu took to Twitter and said that his thoughts and prayers are with the people of Uttarakhand.
