Former India captain MS Dhoni made the announcement regarding his retirement via an Instagram post on Saturday, a day that marked India’s Independence Day, with the following message.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni has retired from international cricket, putting to an end both a storied career and months of speculation on his future. Former India captain Dhoni said, “Thanks a lot for your love and support throughout from 1929 hrs consider me as Retired.”

The boy from Ranchi, who made his ODI debut in the year 2004, changed the face of Indian cricket with his calm demeanour, sharp understanding of the game and astute leadership qualities.

MS Dhoni is also among the most successful captains in world cricket. It was under Dhoni leadership that our country India lifted the ICC Cricket World Cup in  the year 2011. With India winning the ICC Champions Trophy in 2013 in England,  Mahendra Singh Dhoni became the first and is still the only captain till date to have won all three ICC Trophies.

MS Dhoni’s wife Sakshi Singh Dhoni reacted to his Instagram post announcing his international retirement. She commented on Dhoni’ video with a heart emoji and the folded arms emoji.

In January 2019, MS Dhoni became 5th Indian and 12th overall in ODI history to score 10,000 runs. The former India captain achieved the milestone during the first ODI against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground on 12th January.
