The World-renowned Kathak dancer Pandit Birju Maharaj passed away at his residence in Delhi on 16 January. The 83-year-old  Kathak dancer suffered a heart attack. He  was also a superb drummer, playing nearly all drums with ease and precision. He was especially fond of playing the Tabla and Naal.

The latest report revealed that Pandit Birju Maharaj was under treatment for the past month. He had sudden breathlessness at around 12:15-12:30 am last night. He was brought to the hospital within 10 minutes, but he passed away.

He was a descendant of the Maharaj family of Kathak dancers and an exponent of the Lucknow Kalka-Bindadin Gharana of Kathak.

The sources say that  Birju Maharaj was playing with his grandsons on Sunday night when his health deteriorated and he became unconscious.  Later he was brought the hospital where the doctor declared him dead.  He had also been suffering from a kidney ailment and was under dialysis treatment.

Kathak dancer Pandit Birju Maharaj had performed in nations such as Russia, Japan, UAE, UK, France, the United States, Germany, Italy, Austria, and other countries.

 The number of  Indian artistes and politicians, including singer Adnan Sami and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, took to Twitter to mourn the demise of  Pandit Birju Maharaj.
