Today, on account of noted freedom fighter Lala Lajpat Rai’s birthday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi payed tribute towards him, remembering his bravery and dedication in the freedom struggle. Lajpat Rai is also known as Punjab Kesari. Modi said that Lajpat Rai’s strive during the freedom fight will always be consequential for the fellow citizens.
Lajpat Rai was born on 28 January 1865, in Dhudike. He was an Indian author, politician and revolutionary. He played a significant role in the Indian Independence movement. He was also associated with activities of Punjab National Bank and Lakshmi Insurance company in their early stages in 1894.
He died a few weeks after sustaining severe injuries during a baton charge by police when he led a peaceful protest march against the all-British Simon Commission, a commission constituted by the United Kingdom for Indian constitutional reform.
Lala Lajpat Rai immensely contributed in attaining independence the nation. He helped in the foundation of few schools in the country. He also initiated the the establishment of Punjab National Bank. He founded the Hindu Orphan Relief Movement to keep the christian missions from securing custody of the orphans. He had given a slogan ‘Simon Go Back’. He died on 17th November, 1928, in Pakistan.
