Indian film industry has been blessed with some of the most exceptional talents ever seen in the world – be it actors, actresses, filmmakers or Technicians. One of the amazing yesteryear actresses of Tollywood, who charmed the audiences and became famous for her stint is ‘Mahanati’ Savitri. 6th December marks the 85th birth anniversary of Mahanati Savitri. In an illustrious career of over3 decades, she worked with stalwarts like MGR, Sivaji Ganesan, and Gemini Ganesan in Kollywood, and NTR and Nageswar Rao in Tollywood. Apart from acting, she also donned the filmmaker’s hat, produced movies and also contributed as a playback singer.
Her life had more twists and turns than a movie. Savitri embarked on her journey in the film industry with the movie Samsaram, helmed by LV Prasad. She didn’t get much screen time in the film, but the movie was a hit at the box office , that opened up a host of acting opportunities for her. She gained cinematic prominence with Telugu film, Maya Bazaar.
She was named for the expression of her eyes during dramas. She participated in many dramas. Savitri married Tamil actor Gemini Ganesan in 1952, having first met him in 1948. The marriage led to a permanent rift with her uncle because Gemini Ganesan was already married, had four daughters, and was involved in an affair with Pushpavalli. She died on 26 December 1981, at the age of 46, after being in a coma for 19 months.
