Remembering September 11Today marks the 17th anniversary of the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001! On September 11, 2001, at 8:45 a.m., an American Airlines Boeing 767 loaded with 20,000 gallons of jet fuel crashed into the north tower of the World Trade Center in New York City. The attackers were Islamic terrorists from Saudi Arabia and several other Arab nations.

The Terrorists crashed two planes into the World Trade Center, and the twin 110-story towers collapsed. The Smoke and flames erupted from World Trade Center towers as the plane strike.

17 years later, more than 1,100 victims of  hijacked plane attacks on the World Trade Center have yet to be identified.  In New York lab, a team is still working to identify the remains, with technological progress on its side. They  are repeating the same protocol dozens of times.

The team examine a bone fragment found in the wreckage of the Twin Towers. It has yet to be matched to DNA.

22,000 pieces of the human remains found at the site since the attacks have all been tested, some 10 or 15 times already. According to the latest report, only 1,642 of the 2,753 people who died in the attacks in New York have been formally identified. The 1,111 others have yet to be identified.

Mark Desire, the assistant director of forensic biology at the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in New York, said, “The bone is the hardest biological material to work with.”

The attacks killed 2,753 people, injured over 6,000 others, and caused at least $10 billion in infrastructure and property damage. Additional people died of 9/11-related cancer and the respiratory diseases in the months and years following the attacks.
