You might have heard of rent-a-womb, but who ever heard of rent a wife! But it is true. In Madhya Pradesh‘s Shivpuri, the women are not married off with all rituals and proper ceremonies but are leased to businessmen on stamp papers of Rs 10. This rate are usually per hour, per day, per week, per month and sometime for a year. After the deal ends, the husband of that lady, makes another contract with different man and sell her for a particular time period.
In Madhya Pradesh’s Shivpuri area husbands are renting out their wives for money as low as a few thousand. The man who doesn’t have a partner or wife, signs on the stamp paper of Rs 10 and deal is made. Recently, it was also heard that women from Madhya Pradesh ( A BJP-ruled state) were being rented out to affluent men for Rs 10 per hour. While the government is preaching about women’s empowerment, a man from MP, Shivpuri village revealed about this sordid deal.
This is not only happening in Madhya Pradesh. Apart from BJP-ruled MP, Gujarat is another state where woman are being sold. In 2016, In Gujarat, a man sold his wife at the cost of Rs 8000 per month to a rich businessman.
Few people, especially in tribal belts of Gujarat, have smelt an irresistible business opportunity in the skewed s*x ratio in the state. Many tribal daughters are being sold in marriage and it has also come out that few husbands send their wives to spend time with high caste men, who are not able to find a wife, for a monthly rental. The deals are mostly carried out by the brokers who usually take away the biggest share of the deal and leave a tiny sum with the husband. A committed agent easily makes Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 2 lakh every month.
