On Sunday, the Government of India announced that 4 separate ceremonies would be held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on 8th and 9th October to honor recipients of the Padma awards . On Monday, President Ram Nath Kovind conferred the Padma awards to footballer Oinam Bembem Devi, shuttler PV Sindhu, singer Pandit Channulal Mishra and journalist Lalbiakthanga Pachuau, among others. Late legendary Singer SP Balasubramaniam also received Padma Shri award posthumously, honored for contribution to Hindi cinema.
His son S.P.B. Charan, who is also an actor, producer and singer himself, received the Padma Vibhushan, one of the nation’s highest honours, at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on behalf of his late father. On thos occasion, SPB Charan said: We are grateful to the government of India for having honoured dad with this award. This actually feels surreal. We expected this to happen when dad was around. It’s a moment of mixed emotion for us.
The list of Padma award comprises 7 Padma Vibhushan, 10 Padma Bhushan and 102 Padma Shri awardees. 16 awards have been conferred posthumously.
