Gang Movie Review :

Suriya  and Keerthy Suresh starrer Gang /Thaana Serndha Koottam, one of the most-anticipated movies of the year. It  is based on the 1987 Opera House heist in Mumbai, which also happens to be the subject of  Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar’s Special 26, directed by Neeraj Pandey. Tollywood popular production and distribution house UV Creations is releasing ‘Thaanaa Serndha Koottam’ in Telugu as Gang for Sankranthi, despite heavy competition for the festival.

Story: The film, set in the late 1980s, is about a group of people getting together and posing as a CBI raid team to commit heists. They are led by a street-smart young man  Tilak (Suriya) who due to circumstances and a desire to avenge the ill treatment meted out by a corrupt CBI officer Uthaman (Suresh Menon) to his father (Thambi Ramaiah), wants to hit back at the system. He is assisted by a team of con artists (Ramya Krishnan, Keerthy Suresh, Sathyan, Senthil, and others) who have their own back stories. One day they plan one final big robbery and the  twist arises in the tale when real CBI offer comes to know about this gang and chases their activities. Will the real CBI officers catch this Gang? What happens next?  To get these answers, one should watch the movie on silver screen.

Plus points:

  • Performances
  • Comedy
  • Storyline
  • Anirudh Ravichander’s music

Minus Points:

  • Few Boring Scenes

Performance: Gang belongs to Suriya in the central role, who has the desire to clean up the system.   Suriya delivers his best performance and it is refreshing to see him in the strait-laced comedy scenes.  Baahubali fame Ramya Krishnan steals the show.  She entertains with her comedy timing and performance. Keerthy Suresh as Suriya’s romantic interest shines as the coy con woman. Suresh Menon as the dirty CBI officer justifies with  his role. Comedians Senthil and Sathyan become successful to bring  the laughs. Nanda, Ravikumar, RJ Balaji, Saranya, Karthik  and others  perform accordingly.

Technical:  The storyline of the film is interesting. The soundtrack and background score by Anirudh Ravichander  matches the pace of the plot. The Cinematography by Dinesh is impressive. Sreekar Prasad’s editing keeps the film racy at 132 minutes. The director has changed the climax totally from the original and made it message-oriented  movie. He takes a dig at the corruption in the state’s public service boards and the buying of seats in educational institutes.  The production values of the film are good.

Analysis: The film lacks that thrilling element in the climax sequences  but it is an enjoyable ride for the entire family. Director Vignesh Shivan showed his mettle with his native adoption of Special 26.
