There was a lot of silence and nerve-wracking suspense on acceptance of MDMK General Secretary Vaiko’s candidature for the July 18 Rajya Sabha election in Tamil Nadu. Now, at last, this silence has come to an end.

On Tuesday, his candidature was accepted. There were several doubts on acceptance of his candidature as Vaiko has served a one-year jail sentence by a special court in Chennai in a sedition case.

Under the Representation of People’s Act, 1951 Sedition was not listed for which disqualification is regardless of the prison term. This is the reason why Vaiko’s candidature was accepted to contest.

This acceptance concludes his return to Rajya Sabha after 23 long years. Vaiko served as Rajya Sabha MP for 18 years between 1978 and 1996, later he was chosen as Lok Sabha MP between 1998-1999.

Per the returning officer K.Srinivasan, seven nominations were accepted and four were rejected.
