Speaking to the media, East Coast Railway Public Relations Officer Biswajit Sahu said that the accident was due to human error. He said that the accident occurred due to signal overshooting (proceeding without stopping at red signal) by the loco pilot of the Visakhapatnam-Rayagada train. Visakhapatnam-Rayagada passenger train caused the accident. The loco pilot overshot the signal and hit the back of the Palasa train. The loco pilot of the Rayagada train also died in this accident,” said Biswajit Sahu. He said that the investigation into the incident will continue. Only then will the exact details be known.

Currently, rescue operations are ongoing at the scene of the incident. The relief work on the track is likely to be completed by this evening. Officials are working to repair the track as soon as possible and resume train traffic on that route. Similarly, 18 trains have been canceled and another 22 have been diverted due to this incident. Prime Minister Modi expressed shock over this incident.
