After the BJP led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath came to power, the rampage of goons and rowdies continues in the state of Uttar Pradesh. The Yogi government is cracking down on anti-communal forces. The tens of rowdy sheeters were killed in police encounters. Recently, Asad, the son of a big gangster and political leader, Atiq Ahmed, was also killed. A few days ago Atiq and his brother Ashraf were shot dead by three assailants in the presence of police and media representatives. There are criticisms that fake encounters are being made in UP in the name of provoking rowdies. With that, a fresh petition was filed in the Supreme Court seeking the formation of an independent expert committee to investigate the 183 encounters that took place in UP since 2017.

Advocate Vishal Tiwari filed a Public Interest Litigation after the murder of gangster Atiq. He approached the Supreme Court to set up an independent expert committee headed by a former Supreme Court judge to investigate the 183 encounters that took place since 2017 under the Uttar Pradesh Special Director General of Police.

The petitioner opined that if the police take the law into their hands, the entire judicial system will collapse and create fear among the people against them. It remains to be seen whether the Supreme Court will take up this PIL.
