Boat Capsized incident on Godavari River in Andhra PradeshBoat capsizes in Godavari river: Ten people went missing after a boat capsized in Godavari River in Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday, officials said. This incident took place near Manturu, 18 km from the mandal headquarters of Devipatnam  of East Godavari district  around 5 p.m.

At least 40 people, mostly tribals, are feared drowned in Godavari river when a boat capsized during inclement weather in Andhra Pradesh’s East Godavari district. When the incident happened, there were about 50 passengers (including tribals and a marriage party) on board and some of them successfully reached the banks by swimming.

 A team of divers, along with Dornier aircraft, have been sent to Rajahmundry to join rescue operations. According to the latest report, till now, 10 people have been rescued, with teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) being deployed at the site of the mishap.

 The sources say that the cause of the mishap was probably strong winds in the area. The ill-fated boat was on its way to Rajamahendravaram from Kondamodalu when tragedy struck.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his anguish over the incident on Twitter. He also  extended his condolences to the families of the victims for those still missing. Narendra Modi tweeted, “Anguished by the capsizing of a boat in Andhra Pradesh’s East Godavari district. Condolences to the bereaved families. I pray for the safety of those missing.”

 Congress Minister Rahul Gandhi tweeted, “I’m deeply anguished by the tragic loss of innocent lives in the boat capsize on the Godavari River. My thoughts are with the families of those killed or still missing in this tragedy. I request Congress workers to provide the families of the victims with all possible assistance.”

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy Chief Minister (Home) N China Rajappa spoke to East Godavari district officials over phone and enquired about this incident.

YSRCP Chief YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has also expressed anguish over the mishap. Jagan Mohan Reddy has instructed party cadre to help in the rescue works.

The boat belongs to Laxmi Venkateshwara boat services and the owner Khaja Mohinuddeen has surrendered at the Devipatnam police station following the incident.
