Story: The movie starts with a casual introduction scene where Gargi (Sai Pallavi) is conducting an exam at the school where she works. Her father is a security guard at an apartment and her mother is a housewife with a small business. They come from a lower middle class family but their lives turn upside down when the police arrest her 60-year-old father Brahmanandam (RS Sivaji),  accusing him of raping a nine-year-old child with four others.  Gargi believes there must have been some mistake, but the police are confident that he is one of the rapists.  She takes the help of lawyer Indrans Kaliyaperumal (Kaali Venkat) to fight the case. Will Gargi be successful? How does she learn the truth behind the gang rape? To get these answers, one should watch the movie Gargi on Silver screen.

 Plus points:

  • Story
  • Perfect casting
  • Sai Pallavi
  • BGM
  • Climax

 Minus Points:

  • Narration
  • Slow pace

Performance: Once again Sai Pallavi steals the show with her performance. This is probably Sai Pallavi’s best performance till date. Kaali Venkat  was good  in small roles in a few movies earlier, but Gargi uses his potential to the fullest. Kaali Venkat and RS Shivaji have given tough competition to her with their performance. The supporting cast, that includes Saravanan, as the father of the survivor, who is consumed by both grief and horror, Kavithalaya Krishnan, as an overbearing public prosecutor, Livingston, who essays a security guard in the same apartment as Brahmanandam, newcomer Capt Pratap, who adds a touch of humanity to what could have been a typical cop character, shine in Gargi. The rest of the cast including Aishwarya Lekshmi, RS Shivaji and V Jayaprakash perform accordingly.

Technical: The story of Gargi is very interesting.  It is all about the story of a daughter who is trying to save her father. Elsewhere, there’s a father whose daughter has been molested. And, there’s another father whose daughter is going to get married.  The movie tells that no place is safe for a woman. Gargi is an essential film in this #MeToo era. The movie Gargi  is also technically strong. Govind Vasantha’s music is the main asset of the film.  Sraiyanti and Premkrishna Akkatu’s  cinematography workand Shafique Mohamed Ali’s nifty editing add to the feeling of realism.

Analysis:  The movie Gargi gets a lot of things right, with its writing and dialogues. While it raises many pertinent points about s…l abuse in a sensitive manner. The movie also showcases how a small change in perspective can make you see a situation differently.  The transgender judge is a sign that Kollywood is on the path to handling the subjects sensitively. Gautham Ramachandran should be lauded for his work. Gargi is a must-watch film when it comes to the subject, which is so relevant in today’s times.
