On Wednesday Andhra Pradesh government renamed NTR University of Health Sciences, Vijayawada, after former chief minister YS Rajasekhar Reddy. Rajasekhar Reddy or YSR is the father of chief minister and YSRCP president YS Jagan Mohan Reddy. The move sparked off protests from main opposition, Telugu Desam Party, and a section of doctors and local people. Set up by Nandmuri Taraka Rama Rao, the AP University of Health Sciences was the first medical university in India. It was later renamed after the university founder NTR. Many politicians and film celebrities from Tollywood responded on the issue and the latest is Young Tiger Jr NTR.
RR actor Jr NTR took to Twitter and said that both NTR and YSR are legendary politicians and they have an enormous following among the masses. YSR’ reputation won’t be increased and the reputation of NTR won’t be affected by the decision of Andhra Pradesh’ government. The name and fame NTR gained over the years won’t be ruined by changing the name of University.
On the othetside, TDP national president N Chandrababu Naidu demanded that NTR’s name be continued for the health university. He released a statement and said none of the Chief Ministers, including YS Rajasekhara Reddy, had attempted to rename NTR University of health sciences. It is illogical to rename NTR University of health sciences after 36 long years of its establishment.
