The majority of Western social media platforms are blocked in China, including  Threads, Twitter, Google, Youtube,  Facebook, Reddit,  Tumblre, TikTok, Instagram, Wikipedia, Reuters, WION, BBC and many others. In the country China, there are number of  local social media platforms.

Essentially, Chinese people can not access apps and websites that the government does not want them using.

It isoften referred to as The Great Firewall of China(GFW), limiting what you can see on the Chinese internet and this  also affects foreign tourists using Wi-Fi in China.

The Great Firewall is a part of the Golden Shield Project, that covers various areas of China’s national network security.

Chinese government maintains tight control of which information sources are and are not  accessible in China, and this extends to apps as well. In many cases, websites and apps can only maintain access if they agree to co operate with the Chinese government.
