First time in 41 years TDP to lose representation in Rajya Sabha

Despite having abysmal power in the AP Assembly, it seems like there is no possibility for the Telugu Desam Party to win the Rajya Sabha election and it would have no representation in the Upper house. This is happening for the respected party for the first time in 41 years, post achieving reigns in 1983. Owing to current situations, the term of TD’s Rajya Sabha member Kanakamedala Ravindra Kumar is going to be terminated on April 2.

The 3 Rajya Sabha seats which will be up for grabs in the near future, will be occupied by the ruling YSRC, based on its numerical leverage in the state assembly. YSRC had 2 members and TD had 9 in the Rajya Sabha, prior to the 2019 elections. In the AP quota, the number of Rajya Sabha members in the state is 11. However, YSRC won 151 assembly seats with 50% votes, while TDP got only 23 seats in the elections held in 2019.

According to the multiple cases that are being battled by Chandrababu Naidu, speculations rife that CBN negotiated the mutiny of TDP Rajya Sabha members like CM Ramesh, Garikapati Mohan Rao, TG Venkatesh and Sujana Chowdary to the Bharatiya Janata Party, to own security from the Central government to him.

The TDP elected its politburo member Varla Ramaiah when 4 seats in the Rajya Sabha Parliament remain empty in 2020 and distributed a whip to 4 of the party’s MLAs, who had turned to YSRC. So, it is expected that the TDP might elect Varla Ramaih once more.
