Mallikarjuna Kharge, the party’s national president who returned the Congress to power in his home state Karnataka, achieved a rare feat. This is the first time in four decades that the party has won a big victory in the home state of the Congress president. In the 1985 elections in Uttar Pradesh under the leadership of Rajiv Gandhi, who took over the reins of the party after the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, the Congress party won 269 of the 425 seats and took power.
Again, Kharge brought the party to power in his home state. Meanwhile, after Kharge took the reins as the Congress chief, Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh elections were held and the Congress won in Himachal Pradesh. Karnataka Congress leaders managed to impress the voters by bringing the leaders together and executing the strategies perfectly. Kharge, who took care of the Karnataka election campaign along with Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi, was able to reverse the campaign of Prime Minister Modi.
Congress was defeated in 2002, 2007, 2012 and 2017 elections in AP in 1994 during PV Narasimha Rao’s presidency and in UP under Sonia Gandhi. After Sonia Gandhi assumed the presidency for the second time, the Congress was defeated in UP assembly elections in 2022. Again Kharge managed to bring the Congress to power in his home state Karnataka.
