One of India’s most senior leaders, former Kerala Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Oomen Chandy passed away on Tuesday morning. Chandy had been suffering from illness for some time. Oomen Chandy was 79 years old.

Oomen Chandy breathed his last while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Bangalore. He was previously treated at a hospital for throat problems. Later, Chandy was admitted to another private hospital for better treatment.

Former Kerala CM Oomen Chandy’s death news was revealed by his son Chandy Oomen. He said that Oomen Chandy, who was in Bengaluru for treatment, died early on Tuesday morning. Oomen Chandy is survived by his wife Mariamma, daughter Maria Oomen, sons Chandi Oomen and Auch Oomen. The Kerala government has declared a holiday on Tuesday to mourn the death of Oomen Chandy. All examinations in the state have been postponed on Tuesday.

Oomen Chandy served as CM of Kerala twice. Oomen Chandy was elected to the Kerala Assembly twelve times in her long political career. He was the Chief Minister of Kerala from 2004 to 2006 and also from 2011 to 2016. K Karunakaran and AK Antony held key ministries including finance. He represented Puthuppally constituency as an MLA for more than 50 years. He was elected MLA for the first time in 1970. Earlier, he was the President of Kerala Youth Congress.
