On October 7, the Indian government had sent a letter to CJI Lalit to recommend his successor. Now on Tuesday, Lalit recommended the name of the senior-most judge Justice DY Chandrachud as his successor, to the Centre. The recommendation comes according to the Memorandum of Procedure, based on which judges of higher judiciary are appointed.
Justice Chandrachud has received the copy of his letter of recommendation from the CJI. So, Justice Chandrachud would become the 50th CJI on November 9, a day after the incumbent CJI would demit office.
Justice Dhananjay Yeshwant Chandrachud, known as DY Chandrachud, was the former Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court and a judge at the Mumbai High Court. DY Chandrachud is the son of the longest serving Chief Justice Y.V.Chandrachud. DY Chandrachud is currently working as the executive chairman of the National Legal Services Authority.
