Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the newly constructed Parliament building in the national capital New Delhi on 28th of this month and dedicate it to the nation. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla paid a courtesy call on the Prime Minister and invited him to inaugurate this new building. Built in 1927, the current Parliament building is about to complete 100 years.

Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha passed a resolution asking the government to take up the construction of a new Parliament building as there is not enough space in this building for the current needs. With this, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the construction of the new building on December 10, 2020. The construction of the new building was completed in record time. The new Parliament building has state-of-the-art facilities.

The current Parliament building has a seating capacity of 543 in the Lok Sabha and 250 in the Rajya Sabha. Meanwhile, in the new building, seating has been arranged for 888 MPs in the Lok Sabha and 300 MPs in the Rajya Sabha. The meeting of the joint Parliament is held in the Lok Sabha itself. That means the Lok Sabha has accommodation for 1280 MPs to sit at a time. However, the main opposition Congress remained tight-lipped on the new Parliament building. It was criticized as a building built to increase the pride of Prime Minister Modi.
