Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his deepest condolences to Tamil film legend Vijayakanth, whose performance touched the hearts of lakhs of people and who had a huge impact on the politics of Tamil Nadu.

Actor and DMDK leader Vijayakanth had been suffering from health problems for some years. He had undergone a kidney transplant. Because of this, he had to go to the hospital periodically and get tests done at the hospital. Vijayakanth, who was resting at home, suffered from cough and fever. Subsequently, on the 18th of last month, he was admitted to the Hospital.

He was in ICU. He was facing difficulty in breathing. Pulmonologists monitored and treated him. Subsequently, Vijayakanth returned home from the hospital on December 12 as his health improved. Vijayakanth was re-admitted to the hospital last Tuesday.  And today morning he breathed his last.

Narendra Modi wrote on the wall of X: Extremely saddened by the passing away of Thiru Vijayakanth Ji. A legend of the Tamil film world, his charismatic performances captured the hearts of millions. As a political leader, he was deeply committed to public service, leaving a lasting impact on Tamil Nadu’s political landscape. His passing leaves a void that will be hard to fill. He was a close friend and I fondly recall my interactions with him over the years. In this sad hour, my thoughts are with his family, fans and numerous followers. Om Shanti.
