Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced that former Prime Minister of India PV Narasimha Rao will be awarded the Bharat Ratna. Along with him, another former Prime Minister Charan Singh and eminent agriculturist MS Swaminathan have also been given the Bharat Ratna.
PM Modi said that Mr Narasimha Rao’s tenure as Prime Minister was marked by significant measures that opened India to global markets, fostering a new era of economic development.
He added: Narasimha Rao served India extensively in various capacities. He is equally remembered for the work he did as CM of Andhra Pradesh, Union Minister, and as the Member of Parliament and Legislative Assembly for many years.
Narasimha Rao was PM from 1991 to 1996 and is known to be the man who heralded the economic liberalization of India. Charan Singh, a champion of workers and farmers’ rights, briefly served as the PM in 1979. Dr Swaminathan, is known as the architect of India’s green revolution.
