Son of a road transport corporation driver, Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, 58, had  the modest beginning and he used to run a milk counter at Chhota Shimla in his early days. Now he has become Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister. The Congress has chosen Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu for Himachal Pradesh chief minister, stepping out of the shadow of the family of Virbhadra Singh, the former royal who first became  the head of government  thirty seven years ago and dominated the state’s politics till his death last year.

Born on 26th March, 1964 in Sera village of Nadaun tehsil in Hamirpur district, Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu ‘ father Rasil Singh was a driver in Himachal Road Transport Corporation, Shimla, and his mother Sansar Dei a homemaker. He  did his LLB from Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla. He tied the knot with  Kamlesh Thakur on 11th June, 1998, and the couple have two daughters.

Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu started his career in politics with party student wing NSUI and rose to become Himachal Youth Congress president and  later the state Congress chief.

This is the first time that Chief Minister in Congress is not from Shimla parliamentary constituency but from Hamirpur parliamentary constituency.  Along with this, Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu also broke the myth of Chief Minister without a mustache in Himachal Pradesh.
