Sonia Gandhi elected unopposed to Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan

Congress leader Sonia Gandhi will enter the Rajya Sabha for the first time and she  becomes the second Gandhi family member to secure a seat in the Rajya Sabha. Sonia was unanimously elected as a member of Rajya Sabha. She stood in the Rajya Sabha constituency in Rajasthan. Rajasthan Assembly Secretary announced that Sonia was unanimously elected. 

Sonia Gandhi was 1st  elected as an MP in the year 1999 after taking over as Congress president. She will be the 2nd member of the Gandhi family to enter the Rajya Sabha after former PM Indira Gandhi, who was a member of the Upper House from August 1964 to the February 1967.

A notification has been issued as 3  Rajya Sabha seats are vacant in Rajasthan. While the terms of Bhupendra Yadav (BJP) and Manmohan Singh (Congress) are about to end on 3rd April, BJP member Kirodi Lal Meena has resigned from Rajya Sabha after he was elected as an MLA. 

Rajasthan Assembly Secretary Mahaveer Prasad Sharma said that Sonia Gandhi, Chunni Lal Garasia (BJP) and Madan Rathore (BJP) were in the fray for these 3 seats.

A total of 56 members of Rajya Sabha from 15 states are retiring in the month of April and the election to the seats will be held on 27th February. The last date for filing nominations was 15th Feb.
