Supreme Court to reveal the details of electoral bonds to EC on March 12

On Monday, a 5-judge Constitution bench of the Supreme Court denied the State Bank of India’s solicitation requesting extension of time and directed it to reveal the details of electoral bonds to the Election Commission on March 12. Also, the Chief Justice DY Chandrachud-led bench instructed the Election Commission to divulge the details shared by the bank on its official website by 5 pm on the 15th of this month.

The bench also consisting of Justices B R Gavai, J B Pardiwala, Manoj Misra and Sanjeev Khanna, during the hearing, took note of the submissions of veteran advocate Harish Salve, appearing for the SBI. It is said by the Apex Court that the SBI has to just unlock the sealed cover, accumulate the details and give the information to the Election Commission. It also asked the bank about the measures followed by it for acting in accordance with the Apex Court’s instructions in its February 15 verdict.

The bench said, “What steps have you taken in the last 26 days? Your application is unstated on that.” According to the court’s verdict, the bench asked the SBI to do an ordinary revelation. A 5-judge Constitution bench stopped the Central government’s electoral bonds scheme that permitted unremarkable political funding, naming it unconstitutional and ordered revelation by the donors of the Election Commission, the amount donated by them and the recipients by the 13th of this month.

The SBI had asked for an extension till June 30 to unleash the details of each electoral bond liquidated by political parties prior to the stoppage of the scheme. Finally, the bench also heard a distinct appeal, asking commencement of depreciation of action against the State Bank of India.
