Telangana Government letter to PPA: All Polavaram gates should be kept open

Telangana government has written a letter to Polavaram Project Authority (PPA). Steps have been taken to resolve the backwater effect of the Polavaram project on Telangana territory.  It said there is fear of flooding in Telangana’s Bhadrachalam town and surrounding villages with Polavaram backwater.

Telangana has demanded to keep the spillway gates fully open in view of the increasing flood flow in Godavari. It demanded that the gates be opened at full capacity to control the flood flow. The Telangana government has asked the Polavaram Project Authority to let the flood go downstream. Telangana Engineer-in-Chief Muralidhar has written a letter to the project authority.

In the July 2022 floods, Bhadrachalam was inundated due to Polavaram backwater. According to the Supreme Court’s verdict, the flood flow should be completely released downstream until protective measures are taken in the backwater-affected areas.

Telangana government has demanded to study the effect of back water of Polavaram project this year as well due to the unexpected impact of flood at Bhadrachalam.

Polavaram Project Authority has been asked to conduct a fresh survey of the reverse cross sections. To this extent, Muralidhar, Engineer-in-Chief of the State Irrigation and Drainage Department, wrote a letter to the Polavaram Project Authority and the Central Water Society on Monday. He requested that the sluice gates of the project should not be kept closed under any circumstances until protective measures are taken.
