A video showing the presence of bloodworm larva in the water originating from Mula-Mutha River is going viral on social media. The authenticity of the video has not been confirmed but the issue has really caused concern among the people.
In a video shared by Pune River Revival Core member Jaideep Bafna titled Pune Drinking Water Alert, Mula-Muta river pollution is coming to you soon. According to his post, bloodworms known as chironomid larvae were found in the tap water of 20% of the 800 apartments in Blueridge Township, Hinjawadi. This discrepancy has currently been brought to the notice of the Pune Municipal Corporation.
What are these bloodworms? How do these affect humans?
Bloodworms, also known as red midge larvae, are the larvae of a non-biting mosquito-like fly that are commonly found in freshwater habitats such as ponds, lakes, and rivers. Although these tiny organisms play an important role in the aquatic food chain, their invasion of water bodies often affects humans.
How can bloodworm infection affect humans?
1. Water quality: Bloodworm infestation is an indication of poor water quality. These larvae grow in sewage. Drinking water contaminated with bloodworms or coming in contact with such water can cause many health problems including gastrointestinal problems, itchy skin.
2. To transmit disease: Bloodworms can act as carriers of disease-causing pathogens. Drinking or inhaling water containing these germs can cause diarrhea, respiratory infections, and skin diseases.
3. Environmental impact: Bloodworm infestation can have adverse effects on aquatic ecosystems. The growth of larvae reduces the oxygen level in the water. This can lead to fish kills and other wildlife. Additionally, the presence of bloodworms can alter nutrient cycling and ecosystem dynamics, potentially leading to long-term ecological imbalances.
